Speech #860051230

I have seldom heard a more moving phraseYouth is the first victim of war. the first fruit of peace. It takes 20 years or more of peace to make a man. it takes only 20 seconds of war to destroy him. * * * Where.better can the free peoples of the world look for the averting of war and death than to your Nation so vibrant with the love of life? Recently I introduced legislation to provide for the utilization of Ellis Island by the Secretary of State as a training center for Americans going abroad. and to keep this great landmark as a living memorial to American freedom and the contributions made to the United States by the immigrants who have come to these shores. More eloquent than the statements of most others was King Baudouins regarding the promise which is Americas: America has been called a melting pot. but it seems better to call it a mosaic. for in it each nation. people. and race which has come to its shores has been privileged to keep its individuality. contributing. at the same time. its share to the unified pattern of a new nation. I include here a fine editorial on King Baudouins visit. from the JournalEvery Evening.
