Our heritage is made up of many thingsof customs and traditions brought here from other lands. of the political and social institutions which were born abroad and developed here. and of the material progress which our Nation has achieved through the rare blending of our natural resources with the know how and energy expanded in developing them. As we consider our way of life. we become aware of the extent to which our institutions are modeled after principles developed long ago in Europe. Many of the immigrants brought to this land not only their meager personal belongings. their skills and their trades. but also their personal experience with social and political institutions. All this enriched our society. and facilitated the progress of our Republic. In thinking about these matters. we recall Polands ancient pariamentary tradition. and Polands famous constitution of May 3. 1791.
