Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850198782

I would like to read just a few paragraphs from the proclamation of independence of this wonderful new state. The second paragraph is particularly interesting. It reads as follows: The State of Israel will be open for Jewish immigration and for the ingathering of the exiles. it will foster the development of the country for the benefit of all inhabitants. it will be based on freedom. justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel. Israel has at all times extended her hand in friendship to her neighbors on all sides. but that hand has often been rudely rejected by her neighbors. The next paragraph Is also extremely Interesting and I think shows the real feeling of these wonderful people: We extend our hand to all neighboring states and their peoples in an offer of peace and good neighborliness. and appeal to them to establish bonds of cooperation and mutual help with the sovereign Jewish people settled in its own land.
