The trade deficit this year is around $300 .million. and inflationary pressures are growing. The cost of living is rising. despite government subsidies and other efforts to keep essentials within the reach of the average man in the street. Nevertheless. in spite of the difficulties created by the numbers of immigrants as well as by the hostility of Israels neighbors. the people of Israel maintained and strengthened their democracy. Nowhere in the Middle East can one find the high degree of liberty. democracy. and stability that the people of Israel have demonstrated. The effort of the Soviet Union to extend its influence in the Middle East must contend with this convincing demonstration of the fact that democracy works.
