I have no sympathy for his background and his admitted former connections. However. I have no sympathy for the way in which the Immigration Department handled this situation. For 10 years they have been trying to deport this man. and the case has been pending before the Federal Court. On last Friday afternoon. as he left his place of employment. he was picked up by two officers of the Immigration Service. pushed into an automobile. taken nobody knows where. denied the right to talk to an attorney or talk to his wife. He was put into an Immigration Service airplane that night. which had been brought up from Southern California. and was secretly flown to Canada. He was held in custody by our Immigration people and the Canadian authorities Friday night and Saturday in Canada. U. S. Immigration agents were with him and therefore. he was in the custody of the arresting.officers. On Saturday sometime he was put on a plane and sent to Amsterdam. and transshipped from Amsterdam to Helsinki. Finland.
