In view of the disruption of friendly relations between Jordan and the United Arab Republic (Egypt and Syria). the United States might encourage Jordan to cooperate on the Jordan I River project. The Johnston Jordan River Valley plan. which recognized rightly that an irrigation project and the refugee problem were indivisible. expected and included in its calculations a resettlement of the refugees in the Arab land made fertile by the Jordan River. The United States should use its influence to end the suffering of the Palestinian refugees by repatriation to Israel or resettlement in Jordan with the choice of alternative being given to the individual refugees. The Israeli experiment has clearly demonstrated that the Arabs and Jews can live together in mutual cooperation. The Israel Government has pursued an enlightened policy toward the indigenous population of 214.000 Arabs.
