I am happy to extend my greetings to the people of the Republic of Israel as they celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of their sovereign state. I congratulate them on the wonderful progress they have made as a nation during their brief existence. The establishment of Israel as an independent country represents a victory not only for the Jewish people but for all who believe in selfdetermination. human freedom. and human dignity. During its brief lifetime as a nation. Israel has opened its doors to approximately 900.000 Jewish immigrants from displaced persons camps in Germany. Austria. Italy. countries in North Africa and the Middle East as well as other parts of the world.
