Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850194400

Immigration comes under the jurisdiction of the House Judiciary Committee of which I am chairman. Hearings are scheduled to be held in about a month on pending legislation. These will be comprehensive hearings to cover all shades of opinion on the subject of immigration and naturalization. My personal conviction is that the immigration quota law. as we have It set up. is unfair and discriminatory. We are permitted to admit. roughly. 152.000 people a single year under the quota system. But. unfortunately. people of certain races are favored over others. For example. most of the quota of 152.000 goes to individuals of the Aryan or Nordic races. that is the English. the Irish. the Germans.
