Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850188725

I am speaking of the failure of the State Department to make clear this countrys position toward the discriminatory policy of some Arab nations with respect to their recognition of the passports of American Jews and to request clarification of the policy of the combined Arab state. This question assumes major proportions particularly in view of the intent announced by Egyptian and Syrian spokesmen to pursue a policy of antiIsrael activities and considering that Syria now refuses to admit Jews within her borders. The refusal of Arab nations to issue visas to any but nonJews appears now to be a firmly entrenched practice. At every point where this issue has come up the United States has acquiesced before a policy in complete opposition to American concepts of religious freedom. The most glaring example concerned the renewal of the American airbase lease at Dhahran.
