Connelly was a speaker at a party given by the California Emergency Defense Committee (A1953) for Communist leaders who had been released from jail after arrest under the Smith Act. Letterheads dated 1946. 1947. and 1948 list Mr. Connelly as a sponsor of the Committee for a Democratic Far Eastern Policy (A1949. J1952. 11956). An advertisement in the Daily Peoples World of June 23. 1948. page 5. urged that "the imprisonment of the executive board of the Joint AntiFascist Refugee Committee" (C1944. A1947. 11956) be stopped. and announced a protest meeting to be held on June 28. under auspices of the Spanish Refugee Appeal (C1946. 11956). Mr. Connelly was named as chairman of the meeting.
