Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850060212

In my judgment. there is probably no American or. indeed. foreign private organization. which did greater credit to its record of instantaneous humanitarian assistance than the IRC did on the occasion of the historic Hungarian revolution of October 23. 1956. Within days of the first electrifying news of the Hungarian revolt. Angier Biddle Duke. president of IRC. and Leo Cherne. chairman. were in Vienna to make an onthespot study of relief requirements of Hungarian refugees. On October 29. they sent a cable to IRC. New York. which was reproduced as a fullpage advertisement in the New York Times. and which served as a clarion call to the American people for massive assistance of relief supplies.
