Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850017997

I called the Senators attention to the measure which I introduced which would take care of the longrange provisions. It contains that which was suggested and called for by the President in his special message to the Congress. The reason why we have not been able to get hearings on this proposed legislation up to this time is that there is a heavy list of bills now before the committee. We have been holding hearings on civilrights proposals and what not. and the committee has not had an opportunity to get around to the subject of immigration. I am sure the chairman of the committee will call hearings just as soon as we can reach the point where hearings can be proceeded with.
