The tabulation showed 3.938 Nebraskans in favor of statehood and 3.838 against. The Statehood Act was vetoed by President Johnson. The veto was overridden. and on the following March 1 the State of Nebraska was created. Succeeding years found more settlements starting in all parts of the State except the sandhills. Pioneers were beginning to move into the extreme west end of the State. New railroads were built. Waves of homesteading immigrants came. The new homestead law proved a major boon. and people came in from the many States to the east. most to live out their lives in Nebraska. They came in various nationalities.
