Session #84 · 1955–57

Speech #840212953

One of the duties of this Commission would be to "investigate the allegations that certain citizens of this country are being deprived of their right to vote or are being subjected to unwarranted economic pressures by reason of their color. -race. religion. or national origin." Nowhere in this bill are the terms "allegations." "unwarranted economic .pressures." or "national origin" defined. Just what Is meant by "allegations"? What is meant by "economic pressures"? How can national origin be determined exclusive of the first generation immigrants? Would it have the authority to investigate a fight between a Methodist and a Baptist on election day? Or between an Indian and a Negro because the Indian alleges the Negro kept him from getting a bank loan?
