Churches. schools. and monasteries were abolished as Czar Nicholas instituted an arbitrary policy of Russification. Undaunted by previous failures. the Lithuanians again rebelled in 186364. only to be crushed again with cruelty. Siberian exile. and forced emigration. In 1905. another revolt suffered the same consequences. The present oppressions of this longsuffering people make ancient history fade in comparison. A recent congressional inquiry brought out that since World War II more than 600.000 men. women and children have been exiled into the vast stretches of Asiatic Russia. while Russians have been brought in to take their places.
