President. much has been said in this Chamber about how the Nation and humanity would benefit from more liberal immigration laws. the availability of opportunity for more people to make use of them. the ending of discrimination because of race. creed. or religion. and less stringent requirements of the system of national origins. Currently we have an example of all these factors contributing to the discovery of one of the greatest boons to mankind. The example is Dr. Jonas E. Salk. the discoverer of the polio vaccine. Dr. Salk was born of immigrant parents who came to this country from eastern Europe during the late 19th century. He was raised in the poverty of New Yorks East Side tenements. Dr.
