But the Soviet Communists knew a brutal answer to the stubborn love of the Lithuanian people for their soil. their nation. their language. and their culture. That brutal answer was made 15 years ago by NKVD Gen. Ivan Serov. who issued the infamous Serov order which deported hundreds of thousands of Lithuanians from their homes and native soil and dispersed them all over the wastes of Siberia. A few days ago the name of Serov was heard again as another struggle for power convulsed the snake pit in the Kremlin. The same Serov. having succeeded the late and unlamented Beria as head of the Soviet secret police system. has now emerged as the close henchman of Khrushchev. the new Communist tyrant. and today Serov stands as one of the top less than half a dozen masters over the hundreds of millions who live today under the Communist yoke.
