Stephens Church in Arlington to be one of Father Murphys assistants. just in time to take part in the ceremony of laying the cornerstone of the splendid new church. and stayed there until he entered the Army as a chaplain. Those of us who were fortunate enough to know him have a proud memory to cherish and hand down to our descendants. I take pleasure in the thought that the name of Washington. already so glorious in the history of America. was held on high this time by one whose father and mother had come to America as immigrants from Ireland. I take a personal interest in the achievements of secondgeneration Americans. and I particularly like the kind of immigrant family in which the children are brought up. as the young Washingtons were. in thoroughly American style. yet with a care to preserve. along with the religion brought from the old country. legends. and traditions that help to make life beautiful and happy. Young John Washington was taught to love the land and history of Ireland. as well as the land and history of America. to remember the Battle of the Boyne as well as the Battle of Fort Ticonderoga. We here. his friends and neighbors. know that his name is now enshrined in a phrase. one of the watchwords of our liberty. as deathless as "In the name of the great Jehovah and the Continental Congress." That watchword is a simple list of four names: Washington.
