Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830100652

A special quota of about 75.000 a yearas provided under this billwould mean an estimated addition of between 35.000 and 40.000 persons to our total current labor force. This smaller figure is due to the fact that at least half of those who will come in will be wives or minor dependents of the wageearners. Probably more than half would fall in that category. Today. our labor force totals more than 66 million people. We have the lowest unemployment figure in our history. Should we be concerned by a trickle of immigration which is actually less than onetenth of 1 percent of those who now man our industries and our farms? I doubt it! The major labor organizations are certainly not overly concerned.
