Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830100622

Mr. Chairman. during the last session we passed the McCarranWalter bill. There was loud opposition to it. but not so many votes. at least. there were not enough votes to prevent the overriding of the Presidential veto. I believe that one could freely assume from that that what we wanted was an immigration bill at least along the lines of the McCarranWalter bill. Now an effort is being made to override the provisions of that bill with this socalled emergency legislation. Mr. Chairman. I am in favor of admitting to this country. as they can be assimilated. a reasonable number of aliens who have been carefully screened and who have been found not to be subversive or to have a background of communism or a fellow traveler.
