Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830100613

One is human sympathy. We do care about people who are in need. yet this bill does nothing about those who are in the most extreme need. The second is concern for the wellbeing and security of our own country. but to ignore and exclude all refugees in Asia where we are suffering our heaviest setback and defeats. where our position is steadily deteriorating and where the most violent explosions are taking place. seems to me to endanger still further our national interests and to be closing our eyes to the greatest threat today to our wellbeing and security. To pass this bill in its present form will create more ill will among more people than anything we have done since Sometimes we can learn something from our enemies. In 1928. when the Communist Party had its World Congress in Moscow. it adopted a major shift in strategy.
