Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830100524

Shall we hesitate now to admit 80.000 people a year to this land of oppbrtunity? I do not believe we would be so unwise. These new immigrants will not hurt our progress. They will actually stimulate our prosperity. They will need food. clothing. shoes. and other things. and through their increased purchasing power will accelerate the volume of business. I know some people are opposed to Increasing the inflow of new immigrants. Yet I must remind them of the past contributions immigrants and sons and daughters of immigrants have made to America. I read the other day a historical note In a little volume of the socalled foreigner who had come to settle in North Attleboro in 1785. He was a Frenchman who had fought under Lafayette and decided to remain in America.
