We.in the United States must expect to make a contribution to this end before we can in good faith urge other countries to join in this very humane effort for the eradication of one of the acute causes of war. President Eisenhower has indicated he believes 240.000 can be admitted without injury to our economy within the next 2 years. The committee has amended the request so that 240.000 will be admitted within a 3year period. The President has no objection to the period being extended. The Attorney General. Mr. Brownell. has advised me that those who will be admitted in accordance with this program will be carefully screened and that we need not fear the ideologic aims of the immigrants.
