Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830100513

Mr. Speaker. the McCarranWalter immigration bill. passed by the Congress after months of study and hearings and volumes of evidence. established an equitable basis for immigration. recognizing the percentage to which the various nationalities were entitled. This bill expressed thie prevailing national sentiment by the American people and should not. in my opinion. be bypassed by permitting an additional number of immigrants to come into the United States. When the time comes. and it will come. that American industry and agriculture are no longer capable of absorbing American employables. I feel the proponents of this measure. faced with large scale unemployment. may look back on this days work with regret.
