Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830074710

Mr. President. I was in New York when the news came that our colleague. WILLIS SMITH. had passed on. I could not believe it at first. since it was only last summer that he and I were engaged on behalf of this body in the inspection of a number of refugee camps in Europe. We traveled in an open boat up the Adriatic Sea to Trieste. The boat was nearly swamped. Throughout Europe there was an inimitable sense of -humor evidenced by Senator SMITH. SO -the sad news that WILLIS SMITH had gone to his everlasting reward came as a shock to me.
