Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830066983

We in America should do everything we can to give them encouragement. A few days ago I mentioned a program which I thought might be helpful. The least we can do is to give economic aid to the refugees. lifting some of the immigration bars in this country to let them find a home here. if in no other place. strengthening our defenses so that the Soviet Union will know that their phony socalled peace offensive has no effect whatsoever on people who are determined to become free and strong. It is in that spirit and with that philosophy that I shall look at appropriation bills for the defense of our country. at foreign policy. and at the developments which will come about in terms of the European Defense Community and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. What is happening in those countries now is a result of two things: First. the fact that the West is united. and that we in this country pursued a policy of granting economic and military assistance in a political and military alliance.
