As a result. the State of Israel had the tremendous task of establishing reception camps. providing temporary accommodations. and. thereafter. permanent housing facilities. It is of interest to note what progress has been made in this field to date. Some 65.000 permanent housing units were completed within 4 years. Another 20.000 are still under construction. In addition. there are about 45.000 temporary housing units. It appears that approximately 450.000 immigrants have been accommodated permanently. However. there are still thousands of families that are sheltered in temporary tents and canvassed huts. So much hard labor is necessary before the task will be completed.
