Session #82 · 1951–53

Speech #820214862

To be sure. this is a very simple amendment. I myself concede that it does not do complete equity. I have always maintained. and I now contend. that if we are to revise our immigration law on a permanent basis. and if we are to modernize that law and bring it up to date. in order truly to effectuate the statement made by the distinguished Senator from South Dakota. it should be done in a more democratic fashion. We should adopt the census of 1950. because the census of 1950 truly reflects the nationality pattern of our American society. I dare say that if we take the census of 1950. it pretty well matches. so far as races are concerned. the American boys who served in the last World War. but if we take the census of 1920.
