Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810076542

Our occupying army did not find the DPs as clean or as much fun as the native Germans. They were often treated with contempt and with a lack of courtesy. Pity coon turned to resentment. It was our own fault that our orientation program was so inept. In 1946 the International Refugee Organization was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations to replace the bumbling Intergovernmental Committee and be responsible for the welfare and resettlement of these displaced persons. The displaced persons were homeless. Most of them had witnessed the death of their loved ones and the destruction of their property.
