But hundreds of thousands crept past eastern European border patrols into the nonSoviet zone. so that at the beginning of 1946. 6 months later. the total of displaced persons remained above 1.000.000. This group became known as the hard core of displaced persons. We went into Germany with no program to care for 1.000.000 homeless and rootless people.
