Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810076326

Each person to be received must be sponsored by someone in the United States who is willing to execute an assurance that such person will not become a public charge. but will be provided with housing and employment. thus saving our taxpayers the money we are presently spending to support and maintain that person in Europe. Second. Each and every person thus admitted must be carefully screened and must prove his attachment to our institutions to the satisfaction of our representatives in Europe. the State Department. the PBI. and our immigration officials. Third. We are not increasing the immigration quotas of the various countries. but on the contrary we are mortgaging them and charging them in a sum equivalent to the number of displaced persons who would be allowed to come in unoier this act. and thus we will not be receiving a greater number than would otherwise be entitled to come into the United States under the provisions of our general immigration laws.
