Session #81 · 1949–51

Speech #810076326

Mr. Chairman. we have for consideration this morning an extension and improvement of the Displaced Persons Act. which was adopted at the last Congress. I am a restrictionist at heart and would be opposed to letting the immigration bars down completely. This bill has been worked out in such a fashion. however. that those of you who share my views can support it without doing violence to our feeling in respect to our immigration laws. During the war Hitler imported and herded into Germany a vast number of people. against their wishes. to perform slavelabor in the prosecution of his ambition for the conquest of the world. These displaced persons are now located in camps in certain zones in Europe and are being taken care of. provided for and feed at the expense of the American taxpayers.
