Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800198398

From the economic standpoint this bill. supported as it is by the two great labor organizations of America. will bring into our economy people whose variegated skills we need and can use. On pages 16 and 17 of the committee report. there is a list of them. Of that. the committee has said: In conclusion. it may be stated. about the occupational skills possessed by refugees under IRO care and maintenance. that they are varied and represent a rich source of labor supply. Countries actively seeking persons for resettlement in order to diminish their labor shortages have already found. and will continue to find. that refugees can be of considerable value in aiding the solution of manpower problems. That they have other characteristics as well. which should be of help in making them valuable citizens of the country of their resettlement. is also apparent in any analysis of this group. Already those who have come have made significant contributions to American life.
