Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800189758

There is another method so long as the Congress is In session. and that is by passing a private bill. The Eightieth Congress. as I stated earlier. has before It approximately 1.000 private bills dealIng With the cases of individuals as to whom there would be a hardship. Another situation that arises in such a case as the one cited by the Senator is that if there Is no country to receive the man. if there is a country that says he may not come there. he cannot be deported. and he is not deported. Again. it has been the policy of the Government never to deport anyone when he would be in danger of his life or of bodily harm if he were deported. I call these instances to the attention of the Senator because there are many ways of meeting the situation referred to and the situations which might arise under the amendment proposed by the Senator from Connecticut.
