Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800174541

Mr. President. this is a bill to amend the immigration act of 1924. as amended. Under the existing law the alien wife of an American citizen Is eligible for admission into the United States as a nonquota immigrant. but the alien husband of an American citizen is eligible for admission as a nonquota immigrant only if the marriage occurred prior to July 1. 1932. The effect of this bill is to place the alien husband of an American citizen- in the same status as an alien wife of an American citizen provided the marriage of the alien husband of an American citizen takes place prior* to January 1. 1948. The bill in no way operates prospectively so there can be no question of future fraudulent marriages for the purpose of evading our Immigration laws.
