Speech #800141968

Mr. President. on July 26. 1947. the Senate agreed to Senate Resolution 137. which authorized the Committee on the Judiciary. or any duly constituted subcommittee thereof. to study the general subject of the operation of the immigration and naturalization laws. Section 2 of the resolution provided that the committee should make a report of its findings to the Senate at the earliest practicable date. but In no event later than March 1. 1948. The resolution also provided for a report on the subject of displaced persons. one of the subdivisions of the general subject which was to be studied. The time for filing the report on displaced persons has been extended twice. I believe. and that report is to be made today. I speak now of the general subject of the immigration laws. Most of the time of the committee and its staff has been devoted to the subject of displaced persons. The committee is not prepared today to make the report on its investigation of the immigration laws. and I am authorized and directed by the Committee on the Judiciary to ask that the time be extended from March 1. 1948. to May 1. 1948. for a report upon any changes that may be suggested in the general immigration and naturalization laws.
