Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800108275

I think. also of the Appropriations Committee. to a certain extent. it is a problem of the Committee on Labor and Public Welfare. because important labor questions are involved in the whole picture. It is simply a question of how we can have an adequately staffed committee. with adequate personnel to take care of all these problems. In my judgment. we should send a group to Europe this summer that will take care not alone of the immigration question. but of other problems. When that is settled. then the question comes up as to what the regulation should be as to admittance. It has never been. suggested that we should by one iota violate any of our immigration laws. Any person coming into this country must enter in compliance with our immigration laws. The question is whether we are prepared to take whatever our share may be and be prepared to cooperate with the other nations of the world in one of the most important and outstanding problems which faces the world today. So I have asked the Judiciary Committee if they would be willing to appoint members. and I have asked the Foreign Relations Committee to appoint one or more.
