Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800033346

Pulitzer learned in St. Louis: First. the responsiveness of the people to a paper that fought their battles openly. honestly. untiringly. second. the prosperity such a newspaper could count on. third. the power of independence in politics. Joseph Pulitzer. an immigrant boy who could not speak too much English until well after his eighteenth birthday. undoubtedly contributed more to American journalism than any other person. Without question he was the first to show the press which had been granted so much freedom by our Constition that it owed its greatest responsibility to the people of the Nation who had insisted upon the guaranty of the freedom of the press. Joseph Pulitzer was the father of modern journalism.
