He worked his way across the Mississippi River on a Wiggins ferryboat. But from here on Joseph Pulitzer was on his way. It was not an easy road and he did not look for any short cuts. He worked as a mule hostler. waiter. roustabout. stevedore. hack driver. and on other lowly jobs. His newspaper career began in 1868 the year following his naturalization as an American citizen. when he became a reporter on the Germanlanguage Westliche Post. Three years later. after being elected to the Missouri State Legislature. he became partowner of the -Westliche Post. That was his real start as a great publisher.
