Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800032429

In reply to the suggestion by the Senator from Colorado. that no reasons appears to me why what has been done along this line during the past few years could not now be done by the private individuals who are engaged In this business. in other words. they could take over. through their associations. just where the Government leaves off. Furthermore. I should like to suggest to the Senator that if the Government is to handle the matter. then the foreign contract labor ought to be brought in at the expense of the employer who uses the labor. The evidence is that it costs the Government about $200 for each laborer brought inthat is. $200 for the seasonand he works a little less than 100 days during the season. In other words. the Government pays about $2 a day for each laborer brought in. for the actual time he works in the fields.
