Session #79 · 1945–47

Speech #790264749

Mr. President. this bill deals with the right of search. by the officers and employees of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. of vessels and aircraft within the waters adjacent to the United States. and its purpose is to permit the enforcement of the immigration laws. so as to prevent aliens from unlawfully entering the United States. I am utterly in sympathy with the purpose of the bill. During the previous call of the calendar objcction was made bccause I thought the right of search provided by the bill was too broad. I am inclined to think so. today. However. I am advised that enactment of this bill is absolutely necessary for the proper enforcement of the immigration laws. For that reasonand expressing at the same time the hope that the measure may later be improved by amendmentI am withdrawing my objection to consideration of the bill.
