Session #79 · 1945–47

Speech #790227925

The war worker who must convert his wartime skill to peacetime use is in no sense restricted by State lines. The displacement of wartime civilians. particularly women and older workers. by returning veterans. makes high labor turnover the order of the day. In some areas acute labor shortages still exist. but the solution of the problem is impeded by the lack of adequate housing for immigrants. To these problems we must add those arising from the new manpower demands for the housing program. the foodproduction program. and plants whose reconversion has been impeded by industrial strife. The veterans and displaced workers who are swelling the stream of interstate migration. seeking employment opportunities wherever their skills can best be utilized. represent only a part of the national placement problem which demands unified. rather than divided. attention.
