Ill.. an industrial city with a mixed population composed of 17 different European nationalities. The problem of Americanization naturally was a vital problem. a pressing problem. confronting the schools and the community. In trying to solve that problem we organized nightschool classes for adult aliens to try to help them meet the educational requirements of our naturalization laws. Because I was personally interested in this problem and in these hardworking. earnest aliens. who had come to America with their families seeking a place where their children at least might have opportunities that were out of the question in their native countries. I taught some of these night classes myself so that I could observe at first hand the effect of the work we were offering to these adult pupils.
