Session #79 · 1945–47

Speech #790050452

I know you say our founding fathers had some question about the Mississippi River and about the fishing rights on the Atlantic coast and put a twothirds provision as to ratifying treaties in the Constitution. I wish to repeat what I said the other daythat today you have a hundred valid reasons pressing upon you. They did not have the question of foreign immigration. annexation of islands. defense bases in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. or air routes. They did not have the question of tariffs. wages. hours. or working conditions. world peace. and police force. They did not have the question of economic stabilization of industry and currencies of many nations. and hundreds of important questions affecting our social and economic life which will be involved in new treaties.
