Session #78 · 1943–45

Speech #780106508

There is at least some reasonable opinion to the effect they were necessary in order to keep up the standard of living of American workers. but it is quite evident that any usefulness. if such there was. no longer exists. When the reason for discrimination no longer exists it is unfair if we retain the discrimination. The desire to sustain our living standards was what undoubtedly animated the American Federation of Labor. for instance. in their past opposition to the repeal of the Chinese exclusion acts. I happen to have a friend and colleague. the gentleman from Pennsylvania ". who is not only a member of the A. F. of L.. but I believe is an official of that group.
