Session #77 · 1941–43

Speech #770075882

For this woman has the spirit and the consecration to give to you and to me the kind of strength that can only come through a feeling that underneath all this struggle and carnage and hate and war there lie eternal principles. an eternal truth. and the eternal power of God. Can it be that we who would defend freedom of religion are unwilling to let this little woman come to America? I cannot believe it. I believe this decision will be changed. For surely it is true that this is the kind of situation where the power of her spirit will be far greater and more persuasive if she is excluded than if she is admitted. You cannot confine by laws or restrictions the sort of spiritual strength that she has. Mr. Speaker. I beg the State Department to change its order and to grant this visa.
