What happened was that some important new dealers. who were Communist fellow tourists. got into the picture and got Miss Perkins to accept it. Among these new dealers was Dr. Louis Bloch. a member of the United States Maritime Labor Board. who is one of Bridges closest friends. and who has been following the party line for years. Harry Bridges has not been deported for a very simple reason. Until very recently he has been considered by the New Deal highbrows as one of the great "progressive" leaders of American labor. And Miss Perkins dreaded the thought that she might not seem as "liberal" as the next one.
