The Van Zandt amendment makes the measure even more unconstitutional in that it attempts to deny the right of securing a writ of habeas corpus to the person affected. I have heard some peculiar law discussed on this floor today. It has been said that because Congress passes private bills permitting certain designated aliens to remain in the country. or granting them rights under the immigration laws. Congress ergo has the corresponding right in a private bill directed against one named individual to deport an alien. With all the vehemence and emphasis at my command I deny the logic of such an argument.
