Speech #760229065

Speaker. I Wish to repeat what I have said 6n the floor a dozen times. that I am just as much opposed- to communism- as naziism. and -you -know -my positionon naziismn and fascism. But this man.- whom- we are about to order deported. positively states -that he is not a Communist. and that he believes- in a democratic -form of government.- The fact that his- son has served -and has- reenlisted in the- Army of the United States. and in -view of -the further fact that he. himself. by telegraph.- nearly 2 years -ago. calledattention of the President and- the Department- of Justice to some of the subversive activities of- the real culprits. namely. certain members of the German Bund and the Nazi organizations. should satisfy anyone thathe cannot be a Communist. He admits that he has. received aid from many organizations. religious and- political leaders. including even Communists. in his effort to organize the International Longshoremens and Warehousemens Union. which he accomplished and which . is one of the strongest and most democratic and representative. labor organizations in the United States today. Not only does he make clear that although every effort has been made to bribe him. he remained steadfast in his duties toward his coworkers. which brought about higher wages and shorter hours.
