Session #76 · 1939–41

Speech #760169114

So to my great astonishment and surprise this resolution is not going to be reported out of that committee. I want to state here that the committee in charge of this kind of legislation should not be held responsible then for present conditions. The Committee on Immigration has done its duty in trying to determine just exactly what laws to present to the Congress. but we cannot pass any laws at this time without getting at the cause. The cost of the investigation would not be more than $10.000. I know other committees in this House have been given hundreds of thousands of dollars for more or less important considerations than the question before us now of cleaning our borders and cleaning our country of undesirable aliens.
